Root Canal
Therapy
Most patients are surprised to find that modern root canal therapy is no more uncomfortable than getting a filling and it could save your natural tooth for life.

Keep Your Tooth. Lose the Pain.
At Ivy Endodontics, root canal therapy is one of our core specialties. Our endodontists perform this procedure with precision, advanced technology, and a genuine commitment to your comfort so you can keep your natural tooth and get back to feeling like yourself.
What Is Root Canal Therapy?
Root canal therapy is a dental procedure designed to treat infection or damage deep inside a tooth. Each tooth contains a soft inner layer called the pulp, which houses nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When bacteria enter the pulp through a deep cavity, a cracked tooth, or dental trauma infection can develop, causing significant pain and, if left untreated, serious complications.
Root canal therapy removes the infected or inflamed pulp, carefully cleans and shapes the inner canals of the tooth, and seals everything to prevent reinfection. The result is a tooth that looks, feels, and functions naturally without the ongoing pain.
Signs You May Need Root Canal Therapy
You might be a candidate for root canal therapy if you're experiencing any of the following:
- Persistent toothache a deep, throbbing pain that doesn't go away
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers long after the temperature source is removed
- Pain when chewing or biting
- Swollen or tender gums near the affected tooth
- Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
- A pimple-like bump on the gum (called a sinus tract or fistula)
- A tooth that was previously injured, even if it didn't hurt at the time
Some patients experience no pain at all which is why routine dental X-rays are so important. Your general dentist may refer you to us after identifying signs of pulp damage on imaging.
If you're unsure whether your symptoms warrant a visit, we encourage you to call our office. We're happy to help you determine the right next step.
Does Root Canal Therapy Hurt?
This is the question we hear most often and we're glad you asked. The honest answer is: the procedure itself should not be painful.
Thanks to modern anesthesia and endodontic techniques, the vast majority of patients feel little to no discomfort during treatment. Any mild soreness afterward typically resolves within a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
What root canal therapy actually relieves is the pain caused by the infection itself. Many of our patients describe feeling significantly better almost immediately after treatment
If dental anxiety is a concern for you, please let us know when you schedule your appointment. We offer a calm, supportive environment and are happy to discuss options that may help you feel more comfortable.
Why Choose an Endodontist?
Endodontists are dental specialists who focus exclusively on diagnosing and treating conditions involving the inside of the tooth. After completing dental school, endodontists complete an additional two to three years of advanced specialty training in root canal therapy, endodontic surgery, and tooth pain diagnosis.
At Ivy Endodontics, our team brings this specialized expertise to every appointment. We use state-of-the-art tools — including high-powered surgical microscopes, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging, and ultrasonic instrumentation — to perform root canal therapy with exceptional precision and care.
When you're referred to us, you're in the hands of specialists who treat conditions like yours every single day.
Why Save Your Natural Tooth?
Some patients wonder whether extracting the tooth might be simpler. In most cases, we strongly recommend saving your natural tooth whenever possible and here's why:
Natural teeth are irreplaceable. Nothing functions quite like your own tooth.
Neighboring teeth stay healthier. Extraction can cause shifting and bone loss over time.
Root canal therapy is cost-effective. Saving a tooth is usually less expensive in the long run than extraction followed by a bridge or implant.
Recovery is typically faster. Most patients return to normal activities the same day or within a day or two.
Root canal therapy has an excellent long-term success rate. With proper restoration and good oral hygiene, a treated tooth can last a lifetime.
