Nitrous Oxide
Treatment

A safe, effective way to ease anxiety and keep you comfortable throughout your procedure with no lingering effects once treatment is complete.

Breathe Easy. Feel Calm. Stay in Control.

Safe, Simple, and Effective Sedation

What Is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide commonly known as laughing gas is a safe, mild sedative agent that has been used in dentistry for over a century. When inhaled through a small, comfortable mask placed over your nose, it produces a gentle sense of relaxation and calm without putting you to sleep. You remain fully awake, responsive, and in control throughout your entire procedure.

At Ivy Endodontics, we offer nitrous oxide sedation to help patients feel more at ease during their visit, whether they're experiencing dental anxiety or simply want a more comfortable experience.

How It Works

Nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and delivered through a soft nasal mask. Within minutes of breathing it in, most patients notice a warm, pleasant sensation and a feeling of relaxation spreading through their body. Some describe a light, floaty feeling or mild tingling in their hands and feet.

The effects wear off quickly typically within five minutes of the mask being removed because the gas clears from your system almost immediately. This means you can safely drive yourself home after your appointment and resume your normal activities right away.

Is Nitrous Oxide Right for You?

Nitrous oxide sedation may be a great option if you:

  • Experience dental anxiety or nervousness about endodontic procedures
  • Have a sensitive gag reflex
  • Need to remain alert and functional after your appointment
  • Want to take the edge off without deeper sedation
  • Are undergoing a longer procedure and want added comfort
  • Have had difficulty getting numb with local anesthetic alone in the past

Our team will review your medical history and discuss your comfort goals during your consultation to determine if nitrous oxide is appropriate for you.

What to Expect

Before Your Appointment

Avoid eating a heavy meal for a few hours prior to your visit, though a light snack is generally fine. Let our team know about any medications you are currently taking or any respiratory conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as these may affect your candidacy for nitrous oxide.

During Your Procedure

A small nasal mask will be placed over your nose. You'll be asked to breathe normally through your nose while our team monitors your comfort throughout. You can communicate with us at any time, and we can adjust the level of sedation as needed. Local anesthetic will still be used to ensure the treatment area is completely numb.

After Your Appointment

Once your procedure is complete, you will breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to clear the nitrous oxide from your system. Within moments, you will feel like yourself again. Unlike oral or IV sedation, nitrous oxide requires no recovery time and no designated driver.

Safety and Comfort Are Our Priority

Nitrous oxide has one of the longest, most well-established safety records in modern dentistry. At Ivy Endodontics, your sedation is carefully monitored from start to finish by our experienced clinical team. We use state-of-the-art delivery equipment and calibrate the dosage precisely to your needs, ensuring a comfortable and safe experience every time.

Nitrous oxide is not recommended for patients who are pregnant, have certain respiratory conditions, or have a vitamin B12 deficiency. Our team will conduct a thorough health review prior to your appointment to ensure this option is safe for you.
