You Should Not Have to Wait for
Relief.
At Ivy Endodontics at Princeton, we know that a dental emergency does not schedule itself around your calendar. Intense tooth pain, a sudden abscess, or a tooth that has been injured or cracked can be frightening and the discomfort can make it impossible to focus on anything else. We prioritize emergency cases every day because we understand that fast, expert care is not just more comfortable for you in many situations, it is what saves the tooth.
What Is an Endodontic Emergency?
An endodontic emergency is any situation involving the inner structures of the tooth, the pulp, root, or surrounding tissue that causes significant pain, swelling, or risk of serious infection and requires prompt professional attention. Unlike routine dental discomfort that can wait a few days for a scheduled appointment, these situations typically involve active infection, nerve involvement, or physical injury that worsens rapidly without treatment.
Endodontists are the specialists most qualified to diagnose and treat these emergencies. Our training is focused specifically on the internal anatomy of the tooth, and we have access to the diagnostic tools and surgical techniques needed to address even complex cases quickly and effectively.
Signs You Are Experiencing an Endodontic Emergency
Not every toothache is an emergency, but certain symptoms indicate that you should seek care as soon as possible. Contact our office right away if you are experiencing any of the following:
- Severe, persistent tooth pain that does not improve on its own or with over-the-counter pain medication
- Sharp or throbbing pain that keeps you awake at night
- Significant swelling in the gum, cheek, jaw, or neck near an affected tooth
- Sensitivity to heat or cold that lingers
- A tooth that feels loose or has visibly shifted position without any injury
- Pain or pressure when biting down that is severe or worsening
- A cracked, fractured, or knocked-out tooth resulting from trauma
- Fever, general illness, or difficulty swallowing associated with dental pain
- Swelling or pain following a recent root canal or dental procedure that is increasing rather than improving
If you are unsure whether your symptoms require emergency care, call our office and describe what you are experiencing. Our team will help you determine how urgently you need to be seen and will do everything possible to accommodate you the same day.
What Happens During an Emergency Visit
When you arrive for an emergency appointment at Ivy Endodontics at Princeton, our first priority is understanding what is happening and making you comfortable as quickly as possible. Here is what a typical emergency visit involves:
We begin with a focused examination of the affected area along with targeted digital X-rays and, when needed, cone-beam CT imaging to get a complete picture of what is going on inside and around the tooth. This allows us to identify the source of your pain precisely rather than making assumptions.
Once we have a clear diagnosis, we will explain exactly what we found and what we recommend. In most emergency cases, the appropriate treatment is root canal therapy, which removes the infected or inflamed pulp, relieves the pressure causing your pain, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it to prevent reinfection. Many patients are relieved to discover how quickly they feel better after this procedure.
If an abscess is present, drainage may be performed as part of the same appointment. In more complex cases or when the infection has spread significantly, antibiotics may be prescribed in addition to treatment.
Our goal is always to resolve the emergency, relieve your pain, and put you on a clear path to recovery ideally in a single visit.
